Rift Finfinnee

There is an invisible border on the eastern edge of the Ethiopian capital Addis Abeba (Finfinne in the local language). It consists of a large urbanisation project extending towards Oromia, an area inhabited by different Ethiopian ethnic groups and the breeding ground of a civil war. As the director explains both cinematically and dramatically, the film takes a remote look at a journey through the different residential forms found in the suburbs. The soundtrack, however, is based on numerous, everyday conversations involving Ethiopians in the fields or on the street, between farmers and settlers, labourers and town planners, recorded separately between Oromo and Amhara. As such, the film wanders along the psycho- and socio-geographical fault line between rich and poor, rural and urban, sight and sound. And yet, in an allegorical moment right at the start of the film, we see the little pedestrian bridge on the outskirts of the city that has the potential to heal the rift and enable people to live side by side.
